What is Origins

A five-day tabletop convention in Columbus, Ohio, every June.

Origins Game Fair is produced by GAMA: The Tabletop Game Association, the trade body for the tabletop games industry. The organiser describes it as one of North America's largest tabletop gaming conventions, bringing thousands of players together for five days of gaming, industry announcements, previews and community events.

It's a general gaming convention rather than a dedicated miniatures show. Board games, roleplaying games and card games all have big programmes, and miniatures games are one of the main event categories, described by the organiser as a chance to command armies, paint models, learn new systems and battle across tabletop battlefields.

A home for the industry

Because GAMA runs it, Origins doubles as a meeting point for the games trade. GAMA holds a trade day for businesses during the show, the Origins Awards are presented there, and inductions to the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design Hall of Fame take place at the convention. That Hall of Fame has honoured miniatures sculptors and miniatures games over the years, so the hobby has deep roots here even though it shares the building with every other kind of game.

The organiser's site doesn't give a founding year or an attendance figure, so we won't guess at either. What it does make clear is how long the days are: gaming runs from Wednesday to Sunday, with the game library open until midnight on most nights.

Origins Game Fair 2027

Wednesday to Sunday in June, with long gaming days.

Origins Game Fair 2027 runs Wednesday 9 to Sunday 13 June 2027 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Columbus, Ohio. The fair has settled into a June slot, Wednesday to Sunday, so if you're travelling from the UK you're looking at a week away once you add the flights either side.

Wednesday is the quieter opening day: badge collection, the game library and early events are running, but the exhibit hall stays closed until Thursday. Thursday to Saturday are the full days, with the hall open and events from morning to late evening. Sunday is shorter, so shop and see the painting entries before the hall closes in the afternoon.

The hours below are the organiser's published times from the last fair. They usually follow a similar pattern, but check the official site nearer the date.

Badges and tickets

Your badge gets you in. Events are booked on top of it.

At Origins your ticket is a badge. It covers the convention spaces in both the convention center and the connected hotel, the exhibit hall, the board game library and the free events on the days it's valid. GAMA sells badges online through TableTop.Events, and you'll need a free account there to buy one.

Prices. In 2026: full show $125, Premier $200, single days $20 to $60. Prices for 2027 are set by the organiser and shown on the badge page. The organiser has offered an early-bird discount in past years, and it's the only discount listed, so booking early is the way to save.

Badge types. A full show badge covers all five days. Day badges cover Wednesday and Thursday together, then Friday, Saturday or Sunday on their own. A Premier badge adds a collectible badge holder, a t-shirt, early access to the hotel block and early entry to the hall on Thursday, and there are specialist badges for collectible card games and for the puzzle tournament.

Paying. Card only, with an 8% convenience fee. That applies online and at the desk on site: registration doesn't take cash.

  1. Make an account

Create a free TableTop.Events account. You need it to buy a badge and to sign up for events.

  2. Buy your badge

Pick a full show or day badge on the booking page. Add free child badges in the same basket.

  3. Book your events

Event sign-up opens after badges go on sale. Timing: Late April (25 April at noon Eastern in 2026). Reserve seats then, as popular games sell out, though many have waitlists.

  4. Collect on site

Pick up your badge in the North Atrium. Event tickets print with it, and you'll need to wear the badge at all times.

Event tickets and generic tickets

Most events are included with your badge. Premium events carry an extra charge, marked in the event catalogue, and some workshops have a fee shown in the listing. Ticket holders are seated first, but if seats are left when an event starts, walk-ups can join. Generic tickets, bought at Registration, are only needed for events that carry a charge.

Children and families

Free for 12 and under, booked with an adult badge. The child badge gives entry on the same days as the adult badge bought with it, and the adult must be 16 or over. From 13 a full badge is needed. Origins doesn't provide childcare, and there are family toilets and a nursing area in the building.

Refunds and lost badges

2026 rule: badge refunds until 15 April, less a 10% fee. Premier badges are final sale, and event tickets can be refunded up to 24 hours before the event, less the same fee. Look after your badge: a lost one can't be replaced and has to be bought again.

04

What happens there

Miniatures games, a painting open, seminars and a big hall.

Miniatures gaming

Miniatures Games is one of the convention's main event categories. The organiser lists live tournaments and sit-n-go games run as ticketed events across the five days, with miniatures and accessories on sale nearby. The site doesn't name the game systems in advance, so search the online schedule for your game once the 2027 events are published, and filter by day or category to see what fits around everything else.

Tournaments

Beyond miniatures, there are tournaments for board games and card games, plus the Tournament of Pieces, a puzzle competition with its own badge. Each tournament has its own listing on the schedule with a time, a room and any fee, and seats are limited, so book on the day event registration opens if a tournament is the reason you're going.

Exhibit hall and game library

Publishers and vendors sell and demo games in the exhibit hall, which opens Thursday to Sunday. The board game library and open gaming are in Halls C and D. With your badge you can borrow one game at a time from the library and play it at the open tables, which is a relaxed way to fill a gap between events.

Seminars and workshops

War College and Origins University is a seminar and games track covering history, current events, science and technology, and gaming in education, business and defence. There are also workshops focused on gaming, creativity and craft, and the organiser lists Paint N Take among its featured programmes for anyone who wants to sit down with a brush.

Everything else

Origins also runs an artist alley, an authors' area, a cosplay contest, a film festival, stage shows, a playtesting room for unpublished games, a consignment store and a blood drive. There's a Quiet and Sensory Room for anyone who needs a break from the noise.

What's on. Tournaments, the exhibit hall, miniatures tournaments and sit-n-go games, the painting open and Paint N Take, seminars, and a game library to borrow from.

The miniature painting open

The Cathy Wappel Memorial Miniature Painting Open is named after a painter who, with her husband James, taught and encouraged fellow artists in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It's an open, display-style competition: rather than ranking painters against each other, the judges look at each entry on its own merits and award Gold, Silver, Bronze or Commended, with no limit on how many of each.

Judging is by discussion between the judges, looking at execution, colour and contrast, lighting and effects, composition, storytelling and atmosphere, and creative direction. An entry doesn't need to excel at all six to do well. There are trophies for Best in Show and Best in each category, a Judges Award, and some themed awards.

The six categories of the miniature painting open at Origins: single figure up to 53mm, large figure 54mm and up, bust, diorama up to a 12 inch cube, unit on one display base, and youth for painters aged 14 and under

Six categories. Single figure up to 53mm, large figure from 54mm, bust, diorama, unit on one display base, and a separate youth category for painters aged 14 and under.

  1. Pick your categories

One entry per category per painter. A diorama must tell your own story with scratch-built or kitbashed parts and fit a 12 inch cube. A unit must be glued or magnetised to one display base.

  2. Get a ticket per entry

The fee is $3 per entry, paid with an event or generic ticket. Book it with your events, or buy generic tickets at Registration.

  3. Drop it off

Drop-off times: Thu and Fri 10am to 5pm, Sat 10am to 4pm. The organiser can't take entries outside these hours. Judging happens in the evenings.

  4. Collect and chat

Awards Sunday at noon, pick-up until 3pm. After the ceremony each entrant can have about five minutes of spoken feedback from the judges.

Plan your journey home. Entries must be collected in the Sunday pick-up window. They aren't posted back or held, and anything left behind is donated to charity, so don't book a flight that leaves before you can collect. Entries are displayed at your own risk.

Who it's for

All-round gamers first, with plenty for painters and minis players.

All-round gamers. If you enjoy board games, roleplaying and card games as well as miniatures, Origins puts the lot under one roof, and the game library means you can try dozens of games without buying any.

Miniatures players. Check the schedule for your game before you book flights. If you'd like a small force to bring along for sit-n-go games, our skirmish warband guide is a good place to start.

Painters. The open format suits first-time entrants: you're judged against the standard, not against the painter next to you, and the feedback session is a chance to hear what the judges saw. Our guides on how to enter a painting competition and what the judges look for will help you get ready.

Families. Children 12 and under go free with an adult, there's a youth painting category for painters aged 14 and under, and quiet spaces are open to everyone. It's a long, busy convention, so plan breaks.

Beginners. Most events are included with a badge, walk-ups can fill empty seats, and the library lets you learn at your own pace. It's a friendly place to start.

Getting there and staying

A downtown venue with garages, buses and connected hotels.

The venue

Origins uses the Greater Columbus Convention Center at 400 N High St, Columbus, OH 43215, and the Hyatt Regency Columbus next door, joined by an indoor walkway. The main entrance is the North Atrium, near the corner of High Street and Goodale Street, and that's where you collect your badge. The convention center sits on the edge of the Short North Arts District, so restaurants and coffee are a short walk away.

Parking

Parking, from the organiser's travel guide: 4,700+ spaces, event rate about $25 a day. There are four convention center garages and two surface lots. The Ohio Center and South garages fill first, and the organiser recommends buying parking online in advance. Accessible spaces are first come, first served. Payment in the venue's parking lanes is cashless.

Buses and taxis

Columbus buses are run by COTA, and a single ride costs $2. Several stops on North High Street are one or two minutes' walk from the doors, and a frequent downtown circulator runs along High Street. Rideshare and taxis work as normal, with surge pricing at busy times, and there are bikes and electric scooters downtown.

Flying in

The organiser's travel page doesn't name an airport, though it notes that COTA routes include airport connections. If you're coming from the UK, plan your flights and transfer before you book, and allow for the Sunday painting pick-up if you're entering.

Where to stay

GAMA arranges a block of rooms at six partner hotels downtown. Partner hotels were about $179 to $237 a night in 2026, and the block filled up early for the last fair, so book as soon as rooms are released. The Hyatt Regency is directly connected to the convention center. The organiser also points out that hundreds of other downtown hotels are within about half a mile.

Security and house rules

There's security screening with metal detectors. The organiser says metal miniatures, metal deck boxes, hobby tool kits, small hobby files, paint kits and hobby craft knives are all fine, as are folding knives with blades under 3 inches. Larger folding knives and fixed-blade knives aren't allowed, and nor are real or realistic replica weapons. Cosplay props must be checked and peace-bonded by security.

The building is cashless, including the food outlets. Some exhibitors may take cash at their stands, but plan to pay by card everywhere.

Accessibility

Origins is a certified Sensory Aware event, with staff and volunteers trained in sensory accessibility. There are lifts throughout both buildings, accessible toilets on every floor, quiet rooms open to anyone, and manual wheelchairs to borrow from the venue's public safety team. The organiser's accessibility page has the details.

Planning your visit

Five days go quickly. A little planning helps you fit it in.

Be ready for sign-up day

Event registration opens in spring. Buy your badge first and have a shortlist of games ready, as popular tables sell out.

Book the hotel early

The partner hotel block filled up for the last fair. Book as soon as you've decided to go.

Bring a card, not cash

The venue is cashless and registration is card only. Tell your bank you're travelling so your card isn't blocked.

Shop before Sunday

The exhibit hall closes early on Sunday. If there's something you're hunting for, buy it Thursday to Saturday.

Pack a carry case

Whether it's your army or new purchases, figures travel better in a proper case. Our storage and transport guide shows how.

Use the walk-up seats

Missed out on a game? Turn up at the start. If ticket holders don't show, spare seats go to whoever is waiting.

Confirmed

Details checked against the organiser's website in October 2026. Always check the official site before you travel. The event schedule, maps and exhibitor list are published by GAMA on the official site, so that's the place to look for anything this page doesn't cover.

Planning more than one trip? Our miniature events around the world page lists the big shows by region.

Before you go

  • Checked the dates on the official site?
  • Badge bought, with child badges in the same basket?
  • Events and tournaments booked when sign-up opened?
  • Hotel booked, and parking bought in advance if driving?
  • A bank card that works abroad, since the venue is cashless?
  • Painting entries packed, with time for Sunday pick-up?
  • A carry case, water and comfy shoes?

Never do this

Touch their army

Someone's army took them months to paint. Admire with your eyes, and ask before you pick up a single figure.

Lurk at judging

Hovering in the judging area gets you disqualified. Your entry will be fine. Go and play something.

Lose your badge

Lost badges can't be replaced, only bought again. Guard it like the last bag of dice in the shop.

Bring a greatsword

Hobby knives and files are fine. Your full-size replica greatsword is not, however good it looks with the costume.

Skip lunch

An empty stomach and a long rules explanation do not mix. Eat something between games.

Fly out Sunday morning

Your Best in Show trophy will be lonely. Painting entries are collected on Sunday afternoon, not posted.
