Key facts Dates, hours and tickets

SPIEL Essen calls itself the world's largest public fair for board games, and the numbers back that up. In 2025 the fair welcomed about 220,000 visitors from over 80 nations, with 948 exhibitors from 50 countries across 7 halls. For four days in October, Essen becomes the place where new games are launched, tested and carried home by the bagful.

For miniature painters and wargamers it's a different kind of day out from a club show. You'll spend most of your time among board games, with miniatures to hunt down among the stands, and Golden Demon, Games Workshop's painting competition, is on the programme. This guide covers the dates, ticket prices, how to get there, how Golden Demon works at SPIEL, and what we'd plan before going.

What is SPIEL Essen?

A very large board game fair, every October in Essen.

SPIEL Essen takes over the Messe Essen fairground in Essen, in Germany's Ruhr area, every October. The official site brands it simply as SPIEL ESSEN. It's organised by Merz Verlag, which describes it as the world's largest visitors' fair for board games and credits the idea to its founder, Friedhelm Merz.

The fair has been held in Essen since 1983. Over four days, publishers and makers from dozens of countries show their new games, and visitors sit down at the stands to try them. In 2025 the organiser counted 1,716 novelties, which gives you an idea of how much is launched there each year.

Most of what you'll see is board games, but miniatures are part of the mix, from games with detailed playing pieces to Games Workshop's presence. That, and Golden Demon, is why SPIEL earns a place in our events guides. For 2026 the fair fills eight halls and the Galeria.

Which day to go

Each day has its own ticket quota, so the day you pick is the day you go: the organiser doesn't let you swap days later. In early October 2026 the organiser reported Saturday tickets sold out and Friday about 90% sold. Weekdays are the best bet if you want a quieter visit and a better chance of a ticket.

If you're entering Golden Demon, plan around its timetable rather than the fair's. Entries are handed in from Thursday, the desk closes at Saturday lunchtime, and the awards are on Sunday afternoon, with entrants expected to be there in person. That usually means a Thursday or Friday visit to hand in, and Sunday for the ceremony.

03

Tickets and prices

Online only, one ticket per day, and no box office on site.

SPIEL tickets are sold only through the organiser's online ticket shop, and there are no ticket counters at the fair. The shop usually opens about three months before SPIEL, it can be switched to English in the top corner, and early bird prices run until 4 August 2026. These are the 2026 day ticket prices from the organiser.

  • Adult day ticket€25 (€24 early bird)
  • Child, 4 to 12€16 (€15 early bird)
  • Under 4Free
  • Reduced, with proof€22 (€21 early bird), for pupils, students, visitors with a severe disability, and cosplayers
  • Family day ticket€67 (€65 early bird), for 2 adults and up to 3 children aged 4 to 12
  • Golden Demon entry€12 add-on, on top of a day ticket
  • Kill Team laser tag€25 per person, per mission, add-on, ages 13 and up

What your ticket covers

A day ticket gets you into every hall and stand for the whole opening time, and trying games at the stands costs nothing extra. Tickets can't be exchanged, and you can't change the day. If you can't go, a ticket can be passed on with a written authorisation and a copy of the holder's ID, but reselling tickets isn't allowed.

Concessions and cosplay

Reduced tickets need proof on the day. A cosplay ticket needs a complete costume or LARP outfit, so a pair of elf ears won't do. Visitors with a qualifying disability pass can bring an accompanying person free; the FAQ says to email the ticket team after buying the main ticket.

What happens there

Board games in every hall, with miniatures and painting in the mix.

Board games, lots of them

The exhibitor halls are the heart of SPIEL. Publishers and makers from around the world show new releases and old favourites, and most stands have tables where you can sit down and learn a game. It's the best way to try before you buy, and part of the fun is the chat across the table with people from all over Europe and beyond.

Miniatures and laser tag

Miniatures have a presence among the stands, from games with detailed playing pieces to tabletop wargames. In 2026 the programme also includes Kill Team Lasertag with Games Workshop. It's a 12 against 12 laser tag mission, about 30 minutes long including an English briefing, for ages 13 and up, booked as an add-on in the ticket shop. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your slot, as late arrivals can't join.

Talks, artists and awards

The programme has more than stands. SPIEL.Talks, an Artist Alley, an Educators Day and the German Games Award all appear on the official programme. Meet & Play is a free community meet-up where visitors can play and chat with board game content creators (Saturday 24 October, 2pm to 6pm, Saal Essen).

Around the city

Essen Spielt is the city's partner programme, with special game nights around Essen and discounts at local attractions, some of which need your SPIEL ticket. Check the official site for what's on in 2026.

Board gamers

This is your fair. Make a list of the games you want to see, and use the hall plans to group them.

Painters

Look for miniatures among the stands, and leave time to see the Golden Demon entries.

Families

Children 4 to 12 have their own ticket, under 4s go free, and there's a family day ticket.

Golden Demon at SPIEL

How the European leg of Games Workshop's painting competition works.

In 2026, Golden Demon, Games Workshop's painting competition, holds its European leg at SPIEL Essen. Golden Demon has categories across Games Workshop's ranges, including Warhammer 40,000, Age of Sigmar, Horus Heresy, The Old World, Middle-earth, Blood Bowl and Necromunda, plus Epic, Diorama and Duel. Entries are Games Workshop miniatures, each on an appropriately sized base. Here's how entering works at SPIEL, based on the organiser's programme page.

  1. Buy two tickets

You need a visitor day ticket and a Golden Demon ticket (€12 add-on). Proof of purchase is needed to enter.

  2. Register online

Use the entry form on the official Golden Demon page. Registering in advance is recommended, though you can also register at the desk.

  3. Hand in your entry

The registration desk is open Thursday and Friday 10am to 6pm, Saturday 10am to noon. The deadline is Saturday 24 October, 12 noon.

  4. Attend the awards

Entrants must be present in person for registration and the awards ceremony, Sunday 25 October, 4pm to 5pm.

  5. Collect your model

Collection is Sunday from 1pm (non-finalists) and from 5pm (finalists), until the end of the competition.

Awards and the Slayer Sword

Entries can earn Notable, Commended, Finalist, or Gold, Silver and Bronze. The judges look at technical skill, atmosphere, consistent quality and narrative. The overall winner, the Slayer Sword, is chosen from the Gold winners of the main categories, and the winner receives a real sword.

Two categories sit outside the Slayer Sword. Youngbloods is for painters aged 12 to 15, and the Open Competition takes busts, larger models, dioramas, small armies and themed collections; it's also the only category Games Workshop staff can enter.

Planning to enter? Read the category and entry guidelines on the official Golden Demon page well ahead. Our guides on entering a painting competition and what judges look for help with the painting, and our storage and transport guide helps your entry arrive in one piece.

Getting there

The U11 from the main station is the easy way in.

The fair's address is Messeplatz 1, 45131 Essen, Germany. The organiser recommends public transport, and it really is the simple option on busy days.

By train and U-Bahn

The U11 from Essen main station, about 5 minutes. Get off at Messe Ost for the East entrance by Hall 8, or Messe West/Süd for the South entrance by Hall 1 and the West entrance by Hall 3. A North entrance also opens at peak morning times.

By car and parking

The A52, A3, A40 and A42 all lead to the fairground. Visitor car parks P2 and P10 have shuttle buses to the fair. Parking costs €12 a day near the fair and €10 a day at P10. The car parks open at 8am, cars can't stay overnight, and there are a few electric car charging points. Some car parks are kept for exhibitors, press and business visitors, so follow the signs for visitor parking.

Flying in from the UK

Düsseldorf Airport is about 20 minutes away by car and also easy to reach by train; Messe Essen has an information counter in the arrivals area of Terminal B. Essen/Mülheim Airport is about 10 minutes by car. Full details, timetable links and access information are on the organiser's travel page.

Getting to SPIEL Essen: by train to Essen main station, then the U11 to the fair; or by car on the motorway to a paid visitor car park, then a shuttle bus. Both routes end at the west, south and east entrances, where Bob waits with his ticket ready to scan

Planning your visit

A big fair rewards a little planning.

  1. Buy tickets early

There's no box office on site, and popular days sell out. Book as soon as you know your day, especially if you're travelling from the UK.

  2. Make a hit list

The organiser publishes hall plans and an exhibitor list before the fair. Group your must sees by hall so you aren't crossing the fairground all day.

  3. Bring cash and a card

Each exhibitor chooses how they take payment. Many take cards, but the organiser advises bringing cash, and the on-site cash machines can run out.

  4. Store or ship games

Bag storage at the end of the Galeria takes card only. There's also a shipping service in Hall 8 that couriers your games home, including to Great Britain, priced by weight.

  5. Pull big bags

The house rules ask you not to wear large backpacks on your back in the aisles; pull them behind you instead. Handcarts aren't banned, but the organiser strongly advises against them.

  6. Keep your wristband

Tickets can't be scanned twice. If you pop out during the day, get a re-entry wristband at the exit or you won't get back in.

You can bring your own food and drink, and there are plenty of food stands too. Cloakrooms at the main entrances take jackets and small bags. Animals aren't allowed, apart from medical assistance dogs. Carry anything painted in a proper case; our storage and transport guide shows how. The organiser's visitor FAQ has the full list.

A day at the fair in five steps: arrive and pick a hall, browse the board games, Bob hunts for the miniatures, look at the painting if it is on, then home with a bag of games

What to bring to SPIEL Essen, with Bob: a ticket bought online first, a carry case for any miniatures, a big bag because games are bulky, water, some cash, and a plan listing what you want to see

What to bring. Your ticket, a carry case for miniatures, a big bag for games, water, some cash and a plan of what you want to see.

Is it right for you?

SPIEL is a board game fair first, so it suits anyone who loves tabletop games of any kind, and beginners are well looked after because you can learn games at the stands. If you mainly paint miniatures, go for the miniatures among the stands and the Golden Demon entries. It isn't a wargames show with rows of tournament tables. If that's what you're after, our guides to Hamburger Tactica and the Warhammer Opens are a better fit.

Golden Demon and Warhammer are trademarks of Games Workshop. We Print Miniatures has no connection with SPIEL Essen, Games Workshop or Golden Demon; we've written this guide for anyone thinking of going. For more events, see our miniature events around the world. Closer to home, UK Games Expo in Birmingham mixes board games and miniatures too, and Golden Demon's other 2026 leg was at AdeptiCon in Milwaukee.

Before you go

  • Bought your day ticket online for the right day?
  • Booked the Golden Demon or laser tag add-on if you want it?
  • Checked the hours and hall plans on the official site?
  • Planned the U11 or your car park and shuttle?
  • Got some cash as well as a card?
  • Packed a big bag and a carry case for miniatures?
  • Brought proof for a reduced or cosplay ticket?

Never do this

Touch the display minis

Painted miniatures on a stand are for looking at. Ask before you pick anything up.

Wear the giant backpack

The house rules say pull it behind you. Turn round with it on and you'll clear a demo table in one go.

Expect a box office

There's no box office. The only queue you'll join is the one back to the station.

Buy a game you can't carry

That big box is light on the stand and heavy by the U-Bahn. Use bag storage or ship it home.

Skip the wristband

Your ticket only scans once. Nip out for fresh air without a re-entry band and the day's over.

Lean on the competition cabinets

Golden Demon entries are months of work behind glass. Admire them from a respectful nose length.
